A powerful earthquake, measuring about 5.5 in magnitude, shook the province of Elazig in eastern Turkey. The site had already been devastated by a strong jolt earlier this year, with at least 41 dead and more than 1,500 injured.
The earthquake shook eastern Turkey on Sunday morning. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake measured 5.5 in magnitude, its epicenter being just 10 km below the surface.
The European Seismological Center for the Mediterranean (EMSC) considered the earthquake even more superficial, detecting its epicenter just two kilometers below.
According to local media reports, the shock was also felt in other eastern provinces.
To date, no injuries or casualties have been reported. Turkish authorities said they are assessing the situation.
“There is nothing negative so far. All of our teams continue their field exams, “ Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Twitter.
Turkey has been plagued by powerful earthquakes recently, suffering several devastating seismic events over the course of this year. In late January, Elazig was hit by a powerful shock of magnitude 6.8, which destroyed several buildings and left at least 41 dead. More than 1,500 others suffered several injuries.
