DETROIT – Apart from some storms, Saturday was a good day and Sunday seems the same – then comes the first of two storms to end this insane year.
The high pressure sliding east to south Michigan is expected to turn the winds more southwest (even southeast at the end of Saturday night), so that the loss of the Lake Michigan Lake trajectory will allow for partial and temporary deforestation . The casualties will be around 20 degrees, but maybe a few degrees cooler if we get more clarity than expected.
Saturday sunset was at 17:07. Sunday sunrise was at 8:01 AM
Even if some of us wake up with a little partial sun early in the morning on Sunday, the day should be cloudy but milder, with temperatures rising to 30 degrees in the afternoon and continuing to rise to almost 40 degrees in the evening after passage of a warm front (the front edge of a mass of warmer air). There is a chance of rain late Sunday afternoon, but I think most of the rain lasts until Sunday night.
Rain showers increase on Sunday night as a cold front approaches, followed by a few blows of snow (without accumulation) after the front pass. Temperatures that are initially stable around 40 degrees will drop to 30 degrees at Monday’s sunrise.
Monday will be cloudy with scattered snow, and the day will be cold and windy as well. Temperatures will slowly drop to 30 degrees in the late afternoon. Watch for ice patches if the temperature reaches zero.
On Tuesday, the day will be predominantly sunny, with highs in the 20’s and light wind – this will undoubtedly be the best day of the week ahead and a good day to support our local stores by buying their post-Christmas promotions!
Wednesday will be cloudy and windy with rain in the late afternoon or Wednesday night. The highs will recover to close to 40 degrees. The rain increases on Wednesday night and continues on Thursday and Thursday night, on New Year’s Eve. This will be a long-lasting rain event, with more than an inch possible. Since the surface of the soil is now frozen, this water will simply drain; flooding will be a concern if too much falls in a very short period of time. I will keep you updated, of course, at Local 4 and in my daily weather articles. Thursday highs will be between 40 and 40 degrees.
As things are now, we could start the first day of 2021 with rain and then see that the rain turns to snow. We are still not sure about accumulation, as it is still too early to try to be specific, but accumulation is at least possible. Stay tuned. Temperatures will drop between 30 and 20 on Friday.
