Duke women’s basketball ending the season amid the COVID-19 pandemic

After four games, Duke’s women’s basketball team is ending the season.

Duke will not play again this season amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Associated Press Doug Feinberg. The 3-1 Blue Devils have not played since December 9, with all team activities paused on December 16 after two positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracking.

A total of three games against Miami, NC State and UNC-Wilmington were postponed, and a game against Louisville on New Year’s Eve appeared as a potential return date.

The decision makes Duke the first Power Five team to start a season this year and not finish it due to the virus, according to the AP.

Duke coaches questioned playing during pandemic

Coach Kara Lawson spoke openly about how to deal with a pandemic in the past, since she said openly that she didn’t think the season should have been played.

“I don’t think we should be playing now. That’s my take on that, ‘Lawson said on December 9 after a sudden defeat to Louisville.

Duke’s male coach Mike Krzyzewski also questioned how to play in the current environment, lamenting the lack of leadership and planning for the start of the season.
