RPG games are one of the most popular genres in the medium, and, as in all previous years, 2020 offers some really stellar titles.

Every year there is a wide variety of new video games to check out, and among them, there are usually a ton of good RPGs. RPG games are sometimes difficult to determine and summarize, as the genre continues to expand and include a number of new elements. Everything from light RPG games to a classic turn-based approach is always welcome.

2020 is no different in this respect, with many RPGs highlighted. Ultimately, though, some need to come out on top, so here are the best RPGs of 2020. WATCH: instead of trying to place any specific order here, these RPGs are simply listed in alphabetical order.

10 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla the RPG trend continues Origins and Odyssey but with a slight twist. While Assassin’s Creed Odyssey weighed heavily on RPG elements, AC Valhalla adopts an “RPG-lite” approach in which these systems do not overload the gameplay. Everything from dialogue options and skill trees to weapon and equipment statistics to super intricate mission lines are there, but in a way that makes the game play and look more like the original. assassins Creed games than the previous two. Indeed, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla it often seems to be the perfect match of the old action and adventure games with the new RPG adventures.

9 Demon’s Souls

Released with the PS5 is a remake of Bluepoint Games Demon’s Souls, the classic souls title that came before Dark Souls. The original was undoubtedly a great RPG, but with the touch of Bluepoint, the capabilities of the PS5 and the newfound popularity of these super difficult games, Demon’s Souls takes everything that was and sets it to 11.

8 Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

It’s not exactly like Dragon Ball Z the games are new, as many have come and gone over the years. Next to DBZ: Kakaroreally, Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 are still receiving support. Yet, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is one of the most true RPGs of the franchise in many years, and although its DLC execution left some things to be desired, the base game really did seem as if it told the old story with renewed vigor. Putting yourself in the shoes of Goku and a friend, playing in each arc of the story and augmenting the games with additional touches and side missions really bring the world to life.

Of course, one of the biggest video games of 2020 was the remake of Final Fantasy 7. Part 2 is currently in development, but this first entry features the Midgar section of the original with new plot elements that leave the future of this continuation tempting. Final Fantasy 7 it’s a classic for a reason, and all the RPG elements in the game go a long way to bringing every detail to life, including everything from the cloud’s PTSD to the game’s combat system.

6 Impact Genshin

Perhaps one of the biggest surprise hits of 2020 was Impact Genshin, a game previously criticized for being very similar to Breath of the Wild, still being more than able to establish itself as its own game. Players need to unlock the characters, continue the story, enjoy an expanding final game and more to really win the game, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Combined with the well received gacha system (since it is a free-to-play RPG), and Impact Genshin landed in 2020 determined to make a name for himself.

5 Ikenfell

Great RPGs are always cool, but the indie scene offers, most of the time, just as well. While roguelikes like Hades has been the subject of the indie scene, Ikenfell really stands out as a turn-based RPG. As we wrote in our review of Ikenfell, is a “master class in game design, boasting a unique synthesis of tactical turn-based RPG elements alongside its heartfelt narrative”.

4 Immortals Fenyx Rising

Inside Immortals Fenyx Rising, players take on the role of Fenyx as they traverse an open Ubisoft world of Greek gods and monsters. It is an amazing RPG style, as the game can never take itself too seriously. While there are typical skill upgrades and common RPG mechanics, players will likely spend more time laughing as they progress through the story. It is a game where mythological figures like Zeus can make jokes of father and grow up as father, as much as it is a game where a chosen one must defeat the great evil.

3 Persona 5 Royal

Thanks to Persona 5, Atlus’ JRPG franchise is now more popular than ever and has returned to the west in 2020 with Persona 5 Royal. Although the content is basically the same, there are several additions of characters, activities, areas, new mechanics, expanded battles and dungeons, and more. It took everything that made the base version great and increased it to 11, continuing Joker’s trajectory in the RPG world. In fact, JRPGS fans who haven’t played Persona first, you shouldn’t skimp on the last entry, because it’s everything you could wish for and more.

Top-down tactical RPGs are not for everyone, but that statement cannot be applied to Wasteland 3. It’s an obscene RPG, with real OG Fall vibrates and manages to tell an interesting story with interesting companions. Alongside characters like Ironclad Cordite, players decide the fate of post-apocalyptic Colorado while being caught between the Patriarch (and his family) and another ranger, Angela Dreth. It is one of the few RPGs that can make decisions appear to have weight, and the personalization of the characters is top notch.

1 Yakuza: like a dragon

O Yakuza franchise is not new, but the most recent entry, Yakuza: like a dragon, brings many new features. The fact that Ichiban Kasuga follows the example of ex-protagonist Kiryu well is a feat in itself, but the game’s new RPG combat system and the characters’ work are very well done. After all, Yakuza: like a dragon is an amazing RPG, which checks all the right boxes.
