The Orange County Health Care Agency reported a historical record with 4,406 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, December 23, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 134,820 cases since the screening began.
The municipality has also registered an additional 48 hospitalizations since Tuesday; there are 1,854 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Wednesday, 394 of whom need to be in intensive care units.
ICU capacity is decreasing in southern California. The percentages here have been adjusted by state public health officials to represent the high levels of COVID-19 patients among all ICU patients. More real beds may be available.

There were 2 new deaths reported by the county on Wednesday, increasing the total number of reported deaths to 1,781.
Of the 1,781 cumulative deaths reported by the virus, 632 were qualified nursing residents, 168 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.
The breakdown of deaths by age in the county is as follows:
- 85 and older: 33.18% (591)
- 75-84: 22.07% (393)
- 65-74: 19.65% (350)
- 55-64: 13.59% (242)
- 45-54: 7.36% (131)
- 35-44: 2.36% (42)
- 25-34: 1.46% (26)
- 18-24: 0.28% (5)
- 17 and younger: 0.06% (1)
Data on deaths in the county are compiled from death certificates or collected during case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.
It is estimated that 39,526 cases of the virus have been reported in the last 14 days.
It is estimated that 77,076 people, by Wednesday, have recovered. The count of people who recovered is based on the cumulative case count from the previous 28 days.
The county update reported that 1,906,582 tests have been performed for coronavirus since testing started locally, with at least 21,535 tests reported in the past 24 hours.
