Louisville coach Scott Satterfield again apologized to Cardinals fans in a letter Thursday night for his role in rumors about him wanting to take over the vacant South Carolina position last week.
Satterfield – who said he had a “conversation” with South Carolina officials about the open position of head coach – insists he was never really interested.
“Card Nation, I’m sorry,” he wrote on Thursday. “I should have communicated my commitment to you and our program clearly, and better conveyed my confidence that this is the place for me and my family … I recognize my mistakes and today I am asking for your forgiveness.”
Satterfield linked to work in South Carolina
South Carolina fired coach Will Muschamp last month and ended up hiring Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer – Hall of Fame son Frank Beamer – to replace him.
Satterfield is in his second season in Louisville, although he only went 11-12 for the season’s final game against Wake Forest on Saturday. Since he is from North Carolina and his parents live just two hours from Columbia, South Carolina, Satterfield said he felt the need to at least speak to the Gamecocks.
“I think, again, that my intentions were to never leave or go anywhere else, but I thought I had an obligation to listen just because of where you are. “Nothing more to read about it. I didn’t mean to entertain, I just wanted to hear what they have to say. That’s the main point. I don’t want to offend anyone. We are committed to this program.”
Naturally, however, his comments about that “conversation” became rumors that he was trying to leave Louisville.
“Words are important, but actions speak louder,” Satterfield wrote in the letter. “In the coming days, weeks and months I will do whatever is necessary to regain the trust and support of each one of you. Today, and with each passing day, I am proud to ‘give my all for’ Vila ‘. “
