Excluding the years when the market was closed on Christmas Eve, the S&P 500 posted an average gain of 0.2% on Christmas Eve, higher than its average daily gain of 0.13%, according to Dow Jones Market Date. But the average change in the index on Christmas Eve is 0.48%, lower than the average daily change of 0.74%.
