Department of Health and Human Services and Pentagon officials are holding a joint meeting on Wednesday on the Trump administration’s Covid-19 vaccine program, Operation Warp Speed, while Americans receive some of the first vaccines.
Just over 1 million people in the United States received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine on Wednesday morning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a far cry from the federal government’s goal of inoculating 20 million Americans by the end of the year.
The previous Wednesday, the director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, said that if the United States government fails to meet its vaccination target by the end of this month, he expects Americans to “understand that this is a huge logistical challenge “.
“Frankly, I think it’s incredible that it went as fast as it did, recognizing that it’s only been 10 days since the FDA first approved emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine and then a week later for Moderna,” said Collins to CNN.
