More than 7 million Americans were on winter warnings and about 300,000 on blizzard warnings on Sunday morning. Snow and blizzard conditions should continue into the early afternoon, before conditions start to improve.
In addition to heavy snow, winds are very strong in the region, with sustained winds of 30 to 35 mph and gusts of 45 to 50 mph. These winds are leading to blizzard conditions in some locations, but are also expected to weaken in the afternoon.
Stronger snowfall is expected from areas northwest of Boulder, Colorado, to areas close to Cheyenne, Wyoming and Laramie, Wyoming. Cheyenne saw more than 18 inches of snow near the airport, while Denver saw 11 inches at its airport. Boulder caught about 20 to 30 centimeters of snow, and the city of Estes Park was just over 30 centimeters.
Altogether, up to 18 inches of snow is possible in Denver, while areas north of Boulder can see more than 60 centimeters of snow, said CNN meteorologist Tyler Mauldin.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center said there was a “high” avalanche threat for the Front Range.
Snow, coupled with strong winds, could mean that parts of Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota will experience snowstorms, making travel in these areas almost impossible, according to Mauldin.
Southeast may see flood concerns
Meanwhile, flood warnings and alerts are in effect in the Kansas and Missouri areas, while heavy rains are affecting parts of Nebraska and Iowa.
As the storm system moves east in the next day or two, the southeast may also face flood concerns.
Parts of Alabama and Georgia can suffer from 5 to 10 centimeters of rain on Monday and Tuesday.
Tornado damage reported in Texas
There were 40 preliminary reports of heavy storms on Saturday, 11 of which have been turned back, according to Mauldin.
Threats of bad weather move to Arkansas on Sunday, where heavy rain and storms are forecast for all afternoon and night, according to the National Weather Service in Little Rock.
