The Morning After: PlayStation’s next-generation VR controllers look very different

Although the offer is not yet meeting demand for the newer consoles, neither Sony nor Microsoft are standing still. For the Xbox, its Game Pass benefited from two waves of games from EA and Bethesda, now owned by Microsoft, while the PlayStation opposed it with a handful of free games, AAA and indie, and gave us another look at the future of PSVR .

The next morning

Sony

Sony’s new VR controllers look more like orbs (or an old mobile logo) than the old motion wands, ensuring that the next generation PSVR should at least look more like rival VR platforms, including Oculus and HTC Lives. Like the PS5’s DualSense controller, expect adaptive triggers and tactile feedback, and there is also finger touch detection that will allow you to interact with your virtual worlds by pointing. Instead of the shiny orbs of the old Move controllers, all the controller tracking will be done by the headset itself, which can provide a more stable and accurate VR experience – when you eventually get here.

Sony warned earlier this year that you will not see your new virtual reality headsets in 2021, so that must also be true for these controllers.

A Perseverance recording offers the sound of the red planet road.

We can probably blame the metal wheels, but the 90-foot journey of the Perseverance rover in the Jezero crater on March 7 did not sound cold at all. You will hear the space vehicle’s wheels crashing on the surface, next to the crashes and creaks of very expensive space equipment. The original recording also contains a sharp scratch, which the Perseverance engineering team is still trying to discover. According to them, the sounds may have been produced by the mobility system itself, or they may be caused by electromagnetic interference. Listen for yourself. Keep reading.

‘Ready For’ is the company’s version of Samsung’s Dex for Edge Plus users.

A decade after the Atrix 4G Laptop Dock failed to change the world, Motorola is making another attempt to turn its phone into a computer. Through an Android 11 update, Edge Plus users at Verizon can now connect the device to a larger screen for a desktop-style experience on Samsung’s Dex line. This means that you will be able to access all productivity, gaming and streaming applications on your phone and view them on a monitor or TV – and even use a mouse or keyboard. Keep reading.

Everyone is starting a podcast. But how can you improve your game when you already know the basics? How do you bring that NPR feel to your 12-part deep dive at Nando’s? We have the second part of the guide next week. Keep reading.

NBC

You will have at least one marathon opportunity in the series without considering another subscription. NBC’s Peacock is broadcasting all episodes of The office free for a week from March 18, including new episodes of “Superfan” (ie, with additional footage) and behind-the-scenes videos. So far, only the first two seasons have been available to watch for free (with ads) on Peacock. Keep reading.

A sustainable alternative to typical artificial leather.

The next morning

Stella McCartney

This two-piece bustier by Stella McCartney uses recycled nylon panels attached to Mylo’s Unleather panels. It is a leather of mycelium taken from the root system of fungi and that promises to behave, and look, like animal leather, without the same environmental and ethical cost.

Unfortunately, this first outfit will not be available for purchase, but it is the second product that McCartney made with the fake leather substitute. She designed a version of her Falabella bag with the material in 2018, which was displayed at the V&A Museum in London, UK. Keep reading.

Oppo’s X 2021 has a conventional 6.7-inch smartphone screen that transforms into a 7.4-inch mini-tablet screen, with the first offering better portability and the second a better experience for videos, reading, games and multitasking. As the screen unfolds, it must also avoid the creases found on other folding screen devices. Engadget Chinese editor-in-chief Richard Lai spent some time playing with Oppo’s proof of concept.
