Black Widow 100% will be the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This certainty falters, however, when you try and guess When in fact, it will be released.

After multiple delays due to covid-19, Scarlet Johansson vehicle is currently scheduled for release on May 7. And although Disney has released major theatrical releases like Soul, Mulan, and Raya and the Last Dragon at the Disney + streaming service, every indication is that Black Widow this is not going to go that way. It will be a theatrical release.

Unless it isn’t.

In a new interview, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the decision on how to launch Black Widow, and all the rest of the next Disney films, will be made at the “last minute”.

“Our situation and conditions change,” Chapek told CNBC (through Deadline) “Just a few weeks ago, cinemas in New York and Los Angeles weren’t even open. Now, all of a sudden, they’re open, so we’re waiting to see how potential viewers respond to these reopenings. We will remain flexible. We’ll make the call probably at the last minute in terms of how these films reach the market, be it Black Widow or any other title. “

Of course, Chapek is certain that the cinemas of the two biggest filmsgoing markets began to reopen, albeit with limited capacity. What Disney and other studios are going to expect is to see if the audience really comes back to fill these cinemas. What it will happen gradually, as covid-19 vaccines continue to be distributed, but there is no way to predict any type of schedule.

While this happens, Widow and all other films have a multitude of options. Disney can release movies only in theaters, only on Disney + (Soul did this, but are the least likely options), simultaneously on both platforms with Disney + Premier access (such as the studio did with Mulan and Raya), or even mirror Paramount’s strategy, which is just a theatrical release, with a very fast turnaround streaming. At the very least, that last option seems the most plausible for Disney to enter the summer.
