(Reuters) – Tesla Inc’s vehicle registrations in the U.S. state of California increased nearly 63% during the fourth quarter compared to last year, largely due to the success of the company’s Model Y, according to data from Cross -Sell here, a research company that gathers title and registration data.

The automaker reported better-than-expected vehicle deliveries in 2020 earlier this month, driven by a steady increase in electric vehicle adoption, although it narrowly missed its ambitious annual goal of half a million deliveries during a painful year for the industry. global automotive.

The report released on Wednesday showed records in California, a thermometer for the electric carmaker and its largest US market, rebounded from a third-quarter low of around 16,200 vehicles to about 22,117 vehicles in the three months ending in December.

By about 11,417, state records for Tesla’s Model Y compact crossover utility vehicle surpassed those for Model 3. California registrations for Tesla’s Model 3 mass market sedan fell 34% on an annual basis to 7,044.

The total number of vehicle registrations in the fourth quarter in the 23 states, where data were collected, was 44,749, with Model Y accounting for almost half of the registrations.

Record numbers may not accurately reflect the number of vehicle deliveries during the quarter, as records in the United States typically take about 30 days from the time of sale.

Tesla, whose shares rose more than 700% in 2020, is expected to release fourth quarter results after the market closes on January 27.
