Google’s streaming media offerings have taken a major leap forward in the form of Chromecast with Google TV last year. Unlike its predecessors, the dongle is based on Android TV and has many things going for it, including its remote control and $ 50 price tag. Unfortunately, not everything was a bed of roses. Many users have recently reported a bug that randomly asks to reset the device as “the data may be corrupted”.

The problem was highlighted by affected users on various platforms, including Twitter, Reddit and even on the Google forums themselves. It appears randomly and makes the remote useless, making it difficult for users to get around it.

There is no official word on what is causing the boot screen to appear to users, but we suspect that a failure to update the system may have caused it. Since the device makes automatic “continuous” updates, this can happen without any user input.

Don’t worry, there is an easy solution

If you encounter this error, the most natural thing to do is to try to navigate the interface using the remote control. However, this will not be possible as the device is in recovery mode and you will have to use the single button located on the back of the dongle – a Herculean task if your TV is mounted on the wall and the Chromecast is hidden behind it.

You can see the button in the image above.

A single touch of this button allows you to switch between options, while a long touch allows you to select one. It is recommended to click “Retry” if you encounter this error. This should reset the device and resolve the problem. But if that doesn’t work for you, you’ll have to resort to resetting the factory data, which is the only other option on the screen.

We will contact Google regarding the error and will update the article if we receive a response.
