(CBSDFW.COM) – A winter storm is taking place in northern Texas.

Heavy, blown snow entered the DFW Metroplex from the west in the late afternoon.

Some important points to make:

1). This is the heaviest snow in the Metroplex in 11 years. At least 4 inches of snow is expected, perhaps more.

two). Temperatures have been dropping all day, reaching low levels when the snow arrives. The strong winds from the north are creating chills below zero.

3). For the first time, a wind cooling warning is in effect in northern Texas. Dangerously cold temperatures are expected tonight and Tuesday.

4). Another snowstorm is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. It can bring a round of dangerous ice to our southern counties.

Heavy snow and low visibility are expected to continue through the night. Another round will come later in the evening on Sunday, and this second round will target our southeastern and eastern counties. Road conditions remain treacherous and will last all night and most of the day on Monday.

We broke cold records for Valentine’s Day; the coldest temperature ever recorded on February 14 in our 123-year climate history and also the coldest day. More records are expected to fall in the coming days, some of them over a hundred years old.

The coldest air in more than three decades began to move to northern Texas on Sunday night. On Tuesday morning, we expect a minimum temperature of zero degrees in DFW. This is the coldest night we’ve had in more than three decades.

Many homes in the rapidly growing Metroplex are not that old. If your home is less than 32 years old, you will discover in the next two nights whether the outside wall piping is properly insulated.

A second storm is expected to arrive at the end of Tuesday and last until Wednesday. This could produce another round of 5 to 10 cm of snow (or more) for the Metroplex. It can also become a significant ice storm for our southern counties, from Hill County to Henderson County and to the south.

Please stay informed about this storm. The possibilities of an ice storm with this event can be extremely dangerous.

MOST: First wind chill alert issued for northern Texas

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until midday on Friday. This means that snow / ice will continue to occur on many of the roads (especially secondary roads) for most of the week.
