Google Wifi finds a new home with the app’s sunset in June – see how to migrate your network

We’ve known for some time that the Google Wifi app was short on time. Last year, the company mentioned that it intended to move all of its features to the Google Home app, and while almost the entire process is almost complete, the standalone Wifi app has continued to exist alongside Home until now. Beginning May 25, 2021, Google will remove its ability to function from the application and make it just a place to view information about your wireless configuration.

If you have not yet migrated your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app, you can do so by following the steps below. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to manage everything in one place. This process will also work for the long-forgotten OnHub device that preceded Google Wifi.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch Add device or service and then Import Google Wifi network and then Next.
  3. Choose a house and tap Next.
  4. Confirm your Wi-Fi network and tap Next.
  5. Follow the instructions in the application to finish adding your network.

Migrating everything provides several new benefits. First, you’ll get enhanced video conferencing with Google Meet and Zoom. You’ll also get better insights into your network, whether it’s a notification when a new device connects to your network or detailed insights to troubleshoot a slow or bad Internet connection. The app has a fantastic news feed-style home screen that tells you everything you need to know about your connected home. Finally, with more ways to control your wi-fi, such as asking Google Assistant with just your voice to pause the wi-fi or check the speed of the Internet, making the change is not only necessary, it is beneficial.

The Google Wifi app will be completely removed from the Play Store in June, so I recommend starting the migration now or very soon. Although the Home app is fantastic, I had some problems finding options to prioritize a connection on a specific device. I ended up finding it, but it was a little buried compared to the original app.

I say this because, as with any change, we will all have to learn the intricacies of the new layout and that can understandably take some time. Undoubtedly, this change will not please everyone, but I would love to hear your opinion in the comments. Have you migrated to Google Home yet? Otherwise, you can obtain it using the link below and then following the steps listed above.
