Ford delays hundreds of deliveries of the Mustang Mach-E for ‘additional quality checks’

Ford is delaying hundreds of deliveries of the Mustang Mach-E to do “additional quality checks” after delivering a handful of vehicles last year.

Ford Mustang Mach-E delay

Ford officially started deliveries of the Mustang Mach-E last month. It is an important milestone for the automaker, considering that the Mach-E is the first Ford vehicle built from scratch to be electric.

Although deliveries started in 2020, the automaker delivered only a limited number of vehicles, and is now expected to start increasing deliveries in 2021.

However, we recently received reports from several new buyers who have been notified that their next deliveries, planned for the coming weeks, would be delayed.

Some were told they would have to wait up to a month longer, and we received enough reports that we thought it would be worthwhile to consult Ford.

A Ford spokesman confirmed the Electrek that they actually delayed “several hundred Mustang Mach-E models” for additional “quality checks”:

As part of our commitment to deliver high-quality vehicles, we are conducting additional quality checks on several hundred Mustang Mach-E models built before dealer shipments started last month. We want to ensure that they meet the quality that our customers expect and deserve.

The automaker did not give details on what motivated these additional quality checks.

Electrek’s Take

We reported last month about Darren Palmer, head of Ford’s electric battery vehicles, casting a shadow over Tesla for quality reasons.

Palmer listed a lot of problems that Tesla vehicles used to have and promised that Ford’s electric vehicles would have no quality problems:

The doors fit well, the plastics and other materials match the color, the bumpers don’t fall off, the ceiling doesn’t come off when washing, the handles don’t get stuck in the cold …

If you’re going to criticize, it’s best to make sure that your Mustang Mach-Es, especially the first ones, are perfect. It looks like this is what Ford is doing here.

Unfortunately, this is resulting in some delays for early deliveries, but with all eyes on the Mach-E program now, it makes sense to ensure that early deliveries are very good.

We tested a pre-production prototype of the Mustang Mach-E last month and were impressed.
