Congressman-elect Luke Letlow had blood clot surgery before he died

Louisiana’s deputy, Luke Letlow, who died of complications from COVID-19, was operated on for a blood clot before succumbing to a heart attack, according to a new report.

The 41-year-old Republican underwent two procedures to treat a blood clot he developed while battling the coronavirus, the Monroe News-Star reported.

The second operation appeared successful on Tuesday, but he died later that day from a heart attack at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, the newspaper reported.

“It is devastating for our entire team,” LSU Health Shreveport Chancellor GE Ghali told the newspaper, adding that Letlow “had no underlying conditions.”

Funeral arrangements were made for Saturday afternoon at North Monroe Baptist Church in Monroe, the newspaper reported.

All COVID-19 restrictions will be followed and mourners will be required to wear masks.

Letlow – who was due to take office on Sunday after winning a runoff election – leaves his wife, Julia Barnhill Letlow, and their children, 3-year-old Jeremiah and 11-month-old Jacqueline.

“We are heartbroken to have lost Lucas too early, and with many promises, but we are immensely grateful for everything Lucas has achieved in a life defined by service to others and a firm commitment to make a real difference in this world,” said the family in a note to the newspaper.
