Capitol Police: 6 officers suspended for alleged rioting roles

“Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman has determined that any member of her department whose behavior does not comply with the Department’s Rules of Conduct will face appropriate discipline,” Department spokesman John Stolnis told CNN.

CNN reported in January that the USCP had put at least 10 police officers under investigation and two more were suspended.

One of the suspended policemen took a selfie with someone who was part of the crowd that took over the Capitol, according to Rep. Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat. Another wore a “Make America Great Again” hat and started directing people around the building, said Ryan.

Last month, Pittman said the department “has been actively analyzing videos and other open source material from some USCP officers and employees who appear to be violating the Department’s policies and regulations.”

The suspensions and investigations take place at a time of internal turmoil in the department, while police continue to fight the insurrection that led to the death of Officer Brian Sicknick. Members of the Capitol Police issued a vote of censure to the force’s top leaders earlier this month.
At least seven police officers in five other departments across the country were subjected to internal investigations when their presence in Washington during the attack surfaced via social media or other means.

A police officer in New York, one in Philadelphia, two in Seattle, two in Virginia and one in Texas are being investigated by their departments for possible rule violations. In addition, some departments were contacted by the FBI as part of its criminal investigation into the Capitol invasion.

The number may grow as investigators and the public scan social media and make claims that police officers may be involved in the siege.
