Canoo’s electric pickup may be the coolest electric truck ever

If you follow the world of electric vehicles closely, you may have heard of Canoo. Initiated by some former Faraday Future employees, the company opened the cover in 2019 with an exclusive signature electric van that was built on a low-profile skate chassis. In December 2020, after some management changes, Canoo exhibited a delivery van using the same platform and then went public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company. Later today, the company was going to reveal a third EV – the lovely pickup truck you see in the gallery above – but someone leaked the images on Reddit the day before.

The pickup certainly looks impressive. If it bears any resemblance to anything else on the road, it is probably one of those Japanese microvans, although the Canoo pickup is a full-size vehicle 184 inches (4,677 mm) long and 78 inches (1,980 mm) wide.

Like Rivian’s next R1T and Bollinger’s B2, the Canoo pickup demonstrates the advantage of electric motors when it comes to packaging. Canoo’s skate deck is particularly low, which allows for a very advanced cabin design. There is cargo storage built into the nose of the truck, as well as storage bins on the side that also function as steps, similar to the ones we saw in Rivian.

Canoo says the truck is “designed to be exponentially more productive”, whether for people who need a work truck or something to venture out. For the first, the folding work tables embedded in the nose and the side of the bed should come in very handy, as well as the various AC power points. There is an extension section for the bucket, which allows it to carry a 1.2 by 2.5 meter load, and there are also modular dividers for the bucket. The company also says that the pickup was designed to accommodate “a variety of camper capsules”.

The pickup will not go into production until 2023, so it is too early to have full specifications, but Canoo says the vehicle must be available with rear or all-wheel drive, with up to 600 hp (447 kW) and a range of at least 200 miles ( 321 km). There is no word on the price, but Canoo said that a basic model of the delivery van should cost $ 33,000, so the pickup can end up being relatively affordable.
