California releases Nuro driverless cars to start delivering commercial deliveries

It was only earlier this year that the Nuro delivery service became the second company to obtain permission to test fully driverless vehicles in California, and can now claim another milestone. California DMV granted the company the state’s first Autonomous Vehicle Installation Permit. With regulatory approval in hand, Nuro can begin operating an autonomous commercial vehicle service in California.

Nuro says it will start delivering “soon” to the municipalities of San Mateo and Santa Clara, with the announcement of a partnership with an “established” retail partner below. If you expect to see one of your adorable R2 delivery vehicles (pictured above) in action, you’ll have to wait; the startup will begin shipping goods with its autonomous Toyota Prius car fleet before putting R2 into action.
