Boston Red Sox sending Andrew Benintendi to Kansas City Royals for 3 teams

The Boston Red Sox, the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets have agreed to a three-way deal that will send outfielder Andrew Benintendi of Fenway to KC, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan late on Wednesday.

The Royals outfield Khalil Lee will go to the Mets, while the Royals outfielder, Franchy Cordero, will go to the Red Sox, with other players involved as well, sources told ESPN.

Benintendi, once part of the much-vaunted Red Sox outdoor center, missed most of the 2020 season shortened by the pandemic, falling to the injured list on August 12 because of a right thoracic sprain, with Boston later discarding him in year.

He had just an average of 0.103 without home runs and an RBI in 52 plate appearances in 14 games.

Benintendi is a 273 career hitter and finished second in the 2017 American League Rookie of the Year vote. He led all Red Sox players with 15 races scheduled during the 2018 postseason that ended with a championship of the World Series.

He has one year left in a two-year, $ 10 million deal reached in February 2020 before becoming eligible for arbitration in 2022 and a free agent in 2023.
