This season has been a whirlwind in many ways, especially for Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who has had many experiences in the past year.
After beating Nick Foles on the training ground, Trubisky led his team to a 2-0 record before being eliminated in the middle of the Atlanta Falcons game in week 3, where Foles took over for the next seven weeks.
But Trubisky had another chance to prove himself when he took the place of an injured and fighting Bellows just four weeks ago, and that attack has looked different since then.
In the last four games, the Bears attack has gone from one of the worst to one of the best units in the NFL. Chicago have averaged 31.0 points during that period, and they have found an offensive identity that starts with football, which can ease the pressure on any defender.
“I am very comfortable now,” Trubisky told reporters on Wednesday. “I think we are improving each week as an offense, which is important. We are gaining confidence as a unit and are now performing at a high rate, which helps consistency across sectors. And we have been efficient. So, I definitely feel comfortable. And I’m very confident of where we are, mentality with the guys and how we’re dealing with each week. “
It certainly helps that coach Matt Nagy took a step back, transferring the play-call functions to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, with Bears handling the attack to suit the strengths of his players, including Trubisky.
Trubisky seemed more confident and decisive in his game, where his contribution to how the attack should be made was enormous for the turnaround. This year was a learning experience for Trubisky, who realized the importance of talking to his coaches and letting them know that these are the things he does well and that he runs football more with David Montgomery, involving tight end Cole Kmet more and using Trubisky’s mobility are things that this crime should be doing.
“I would say I just wanted to control my own destiny,” said Trubisky. “I am controlling what I can control at the moment and I am just trying to take control of my career and put it in the direction that I want it to go. Sometimes you have to be a little bit more assertive and talk about what you want to happen, about what you believe. And just go there and continue to put the team first, like I did. Just keep working hard, try to improve my art, keep improving every day. But there was a small switch that changed at the beginning, where I only had to get to that advantage a little bit to take control of my own destiny at this point. “
Bears turned down Trubisky’s fifth-year option earlier this season, which made his future uncertain in Chicago. But Trubisky’s move in the past month has left many wondering if the Bears would hire him again for a short-term deal in 2021. Especially considering that this Chicago attack has looked so good in recent weeks.
At this point, it looks like Trubisky is throwing himself into a new contract – whether with the Bears or elsewhere in 2021.
