11,000 boxes of ice cream are being collected because they may contain pieces of metal

A recall has been issued for more than 11,000 containers of Weis Markets ice cream products that may be contaminated with pieces of metal equipment, according to the FDA.
“The products may be contaminated with foreign materials, specifically parts of metal filling equipment,” the company said in a press release, adding that there is concern that the foreign material could be a choking hazard.

The recall covers 10,869 units of Weis Quality Cookies and Cream Ice Cream 48-ounce containers and 502 3-gallon bulk containers of Klein Vanilla Dairy Ice Cream.

There is a report by a customer who found “intact metal equipment” in a 48-ounce box of cookies and cream, the company said.

The 48-ounce containers were sold in all 197 Weis Markets supermarkets, located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and West Virginia. They have already been withdrawn from the sale, the company said.

The product has an expiration date until October 21, 2020, located on the bottom of the packaging. Customers who purchased the product can return it for a full refund.

The 3-gallon Klein’s Vanilla bulk ice cream was not for sale at retail. It was sold to a retail establishment in New York and was removed, the company said.

The additional ice creams that were packed on the same day as the collected items were stored in a warehouse and were not distributed, according to the company.

Customers looking for additional information can contact Weis Customer Service, the company said.
